The ideal time to visit depends on your preferences for weather and water conditions.

• December through April: Largest north Atlantic swells, dynamic conditions, most reliable weather, and lower humidity. Best season overall for pleasant conditions.
• June through August: Calmer seas, warmer water, but afternoon thunderstorms are common.
• January to April: Dry season offering the most consistent beach weather.
• Morning visits (8am-11am): Provide the best combination of good weather and manageable crowds. Arrive before 10am to secure the best parking spots and beach locations.

Sun & Skin Protection:

• Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) applied regularly
• Hat for sun protection (tropical sun is intense 10am-2pm)
• Lightweight long-sleeve shirt or rash guard

Hydration & Nutrition:

• Local Restaurants & Food Stalls (Chinchorros): Look for roadside establishments serving traditional Puerto Rican fare including fresh seafood, mofongo (mashed plantain with garlic), tostones (fried plantain slices), empanadillas, bacalaítos (codfish fritters), and piraguas (shaved ice with fruit syrup). Ask locals for their favorite spots—the best food is often at the least conspicuous establishments.
• Playa Oeste: Another beach in the Mayaguez area with a different character, worth visiting if beach hopping.

• Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of fresh water—staying hydrated in the tropical heat is essential for your health and comfort.
• Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash and leave the beach as you found it. Puerto Rico's coastal ecosystems are under pressure from development and climate change, and responsible visitors make a real difference.
• Beach Access Rights: As with all Puerto Rico beaches, the beach zone up to the high-tide mark is public land by law, regardless of any adjacent private property or signage suggesting otherwise. You have the legal right to access and enjoy any beach in Puerto Rico.
• Sea Turtle Protection: Between April and November, sea turtles may nest on sandy beaches. If you spot a nest or hatchlings, keep your distance and report it to the DRNA (Department of Natural Resources).
