History & Background

Playa Los Machos sits on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico in Ceiba, occupying a wide, shallow bay that was once part of the massive Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. The beach's history is inseparable from the military installation that shaped Ceiba's landscape and economy for over six decades.

In 1940, as World War II expanded, the U.S. Navy began acquiring land for what would become the largest naval installation in the world at its peak, covering approximately 8,600 acres. Playa Los Machos fell within or adjacent to the base perimeter, and public access was restricted for decades. Roosevelt Roads closed in March 2004, following the end of Navy operations. The beach emerged as a public area in the post-closure period, with its calm, shallow waters becoming accessible to families and local residents. The beach's name, which translates to "Beach of the Males," may refer to marine life historically observed in the bay.

The bay is protected from heavy surf by its orientation and offshore reef structures, creating calm conditions suitable for families with young children. The water stays shallow for a considerable distance from shore, often remaining waist-deep fifty yards out. This gentle profile, combined with the lack of strong currents, distinguishes Los Machos from more exposed beaches along Puerto Rico's east coast.

Best Time to Visit

Playa Los Machos benefits from its east-coast orientation, which provides shelter from large north swells. The dry season from December through April offers the most pleasant weather, with lower humidity and reduced rainfall. Mornings are typically calm, with the flattest water before trade winds build in the afternoon.

  • December to April: Ideal conditions with calm mornings and pleasant temperatures
  • May to October: Warmer water and lighter winds on many days, though afternoon thunderstorms are common; storms usually pass within 30-60 minutes
  • Weekday mornings year-round: Best for avoiding crowds; you may find only a handful of other visitors
  • Avoid after heavy rains: Water quality temporarily degrades from runoff; wait a day before swimming

Getting There

From San Juan, take Route 66 East (toll expressway) which connects to Route 3 heading toward Fajardo and Ceiba. The total drive takes roughly 1 to 1.25 hours depending on traffic. From Fajardo, Playa Los Machos is about 15 minutes south via Route 3 and local roads through Ceiba.

  1. Take Route 66 East from San Juan toward Fajardo and Ceiba
  2. Continue on Route 3 southward through Fajardo
  3. Follow signs and local roads indicating the former Roosevelt Roads base area
  4. Navigate to the beach access road running along the former base's waterfront

Parking: An informal parking lot is available near the beach with no entrance fee. The area is not extensively developed with signage, so using GPS coordinates (18.262669, -65.630055) or asking locally for directions may be necessary. The Ceiba ferry terminal, which serves Vieques and Culebra, is nearby, making Los Machos a convenient stop before or after a ferry trip.

What to Bring

Water and Food:

  • Cooler with drinking water, snacks, and lunch (no nearby restaurants or stores)

Sun and Shade Protection:

  • Sunscreen (reef-safe formula recommended)
  • Beach umbrella or pop-up canopy for extended visits
  • Hat and UV-protective clothing, especially for children

Beach Gear:

  • Beach chairs and towels
  • Water shoes as precaution against rocky patches or debris

  • Trash bag for packing out all items
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes present in vegetation, especially late afternoon)

Nearby Attractions

Playa Los Machos is ideally located for combining beach time with other east-coast attractions. The Ceiba ferry terminal is minutes away, making this an excellent spot to spend time while waiting for service to nearby islands.

  • Ceiba Ferry Terminal: Minutes away; departure point for ferries to Vieques and Culebra
  • Seven Seas Beach (Fajardo): About 15 minutes north; popular public beach with lifeguards, restrooms, food vendors, equipment rentals, and calm, protected swimming
  • Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve: Near Fajardo; guided tours through mangrove forests, bioluminescent lagoons, dry forest, and a nineteenth-century lighthouse (advance reservations required)
  • Fajardo Marinas: Puerto del Rey and other marinas offer boat charters, catamaran tours to offshore cays like Icacos and Palominito, and snorkeling excursions departing daily

Local Tips

  • Come with realistic expectations: This is a local spot rewarding visitors who appreciate simplicity—calm water, wide sand, and few people. Arrive expecting amenities and manicured grounds and you'll be disappointed.
  • Shallow water extends far from shore: Perfect for children but frustrating for swimmers wanting depth. Wade well beyond initial shallows; the bottom eventually drops off, though you may need to go 100+ yards depending on tide.
  • Navigation apps can be confusing: Roads within the former Roosevelt Roads property are poorly marked or gated. If you hit a dead end, backtrack and try an alternate route. Asking locals for "la playa Los Machos" usually helps.
  • Monitor water quality after rain: The bay's water quality degrades after heavy rains when sediment and runoff flow in. Brownish tint is mostly sediment, but it reduces visibility. Wait a day after significant rainfall before swimming.
  • Plan buffer time for ferry connections: The Ceiba ferry service has a reputation for schedule changes and delays. Arrive at the terminal well before your scheduled departure. The terminal has limited seating and no food service.
  • Stock supplies in Fajardo: The Walmart and other stores in Fajardo (15 minutes north) offer the widest selection. Buy groceries there before heading to Los Machos or the ferry terminal.
