About This Beach
History & Background+

Playa Los Machos sits on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico in Ceiba, occupying a wide, shallow bay that was once part of the massive Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. The beach's history is inseparable from the military installation that shaped Ceiba's landscape and economy for over six decades.

In 1940, as World War II expanded, the U.S. Navy began acquiring land for what would become the largest naval installation in the world at its peak, covering approximately 8,600 acres. Playa Los Machos fell within or adjacent to the base perimeter, and public access was restricted for decades. Roosevelt Roads closed in March 2004, following the end of Navy operations. The beach emerged as a public area in the post-closure period, with its calm, shallow waters becoming accessible to families and local residents. The beach's name, which translates to "Beach of the Males," may refer to marine life historically observed in the bay.

The bay is protected from heavy surf by its orientation and offshore reef structures, creating calm conditions suitable for families with young children. The water stays shallow for a considerable distance from shore, often remaining waist-deep fifty yards out. This gentle profile, combined with the lack of strong currents, distinguishes Los Machos from more exposed beaches along Puerto Rico's east coast.
