Vieques is Puerto Rico's unspoiled island paradise, home to 30 beaches that range from easy-access public shores to hidden coves reached only by dirt roads. The former U.S. Navy lands, now the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, protect vast stretches of untouched coastline.

The island is world-famous for Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay on Earth. But Vieques' beaches are equally spectacular - Sun Bay, Playa Caracas (Red Beach), and Secret Beach offer pristine sand, crystal waters, and the chance to share the shore with wild horses.

Wild horses roam freely on Vieques and are often seen on beaches. Admire from a distance and never feed them.

A 4x4 vehicle is essential for reaching the best beaches. Many are accessed via unpaved roads in the wildlife refuge.

Most Vieques beaches have no facilities. Bring water, food, sunscreen, and trash bags. The nearest stores are in Isabel Segunda or Esperanza.

How do I get to Vieques? ▼
Take the ferry from Ceiba (formerly Fajardo) which takes about 45 minutes, or fly from San Juan on Cape Air (25 minutes). Book ferry tickets online in advance as they sell out.
Do I need a car in Vieques? ▼
A rental car, preferably a 4x4/Jeep, is highly recommended. Many of the best beaches are reached via unpaved roads in the wildlife refuge. Taxis are available but expensive for beach hopping.

The beaches are generally safe, but there are no lifeguards at most spots. Swim with a buddy, watch for strong currents, and avoid the former military areas that are off-limits (clearly marked). Sun exposure is intense.
