Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the best surfing beaches in Puerto Rico?
The west coast is Puerto Rico's surfing heartland. Rincón (Domes, Maria's, Tres Palmas), Aguadilla (Crash Boat, Wilderness, Gas Chambers), and Isabela (Jobos, Shacks) host the most consistent and famous breaks. The north coast also fires during winter swells, particularly around Arecibo and Manatí.
When is the best time of year for surfing in Puerto Rico?
The prime surf season runs from October through March, when North Atlantic swells reach the west and north coasts. Winter brings head-high to overhead waves at most spots, with the biggest swells in December and January. Summer surf is smaller but still surfable, especially early mornings before the trade winds pick up.
Are there surf spots for beginners in Puerto Rico?
Yes. Sandy Beach and Playa Shacks in Isabela, and Jobos on smaller days, are popular beginner spots with sandy bottoms and forgiving waves. Rincón's Sandy Beach and several Aguadilla breaks also suit learners. Many local surf schools offer lessons and board rentals at these beaches.
