What are the most secluded beaches in Puerto Rico?
Playa La Chiva and Playa Caracas on Vieques, Playa Sucia's surrounding coves in Cabo Rojo, Playuela and the western cliffs of Aguadilla, and the beaches of Mona Island all reward the effort of getting there with near-total solitude. The offshore cays of La Cordillera near Fajardo are also essentially private on weekdays.
How do I get to secluded beaches in Puerto Rico?
Some are a short walk from a parking area, others need a 4WD vehicle or a boat. Playa La Chiva and Caracas on Vieques are reached via the former Navy base roads — 4WD recommended but not required. Mona Island requires a licensed boat charter and advance permits. Always check current road and access conditions before setting out.
What should I bring to a secluded beach?
Pack more than you think you'll need: plenty of water, snacks or lunch, sunscreen, shade (umbrella or beach tent), reef-safe bug spray, a trash bag, a charged phone, and a first-aid kit. Most secluded beaches have no vendors, restrooms, or cell service. Let someone know where you're going and plan to leave before dusk.
